What is Enhancement-Mode


In electronics, 'Enhancement-Mode' is a term used to describe the mode of operation of a particular type of transistor. The 'Enhancement-Mode' transistor has an operation method that applies an electrical signal to the gate terminal of the transistor to form a channel and allow current flow.

An Enhancement-Mode transistor creates a channel inside the transistor by injecting a positive voltage into its gate terminal. This activates the transistor, allowing current to flow. Conversely, injecting a negative voltage across the gate terminal cuts off the transistor and no current flows.

Enhancement-Mode transistors usually consist of a p-type MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) and an n-type MOSFET. Also called pMOSFET and nMOSFET, respectively, when the appropriate voltage is applied, the corresponding transistor is activated to allow current to pass.

Enhancement-Mode transistors are used in a variety of electronic components and systems, including digital logic circuits, semiconductor memories, power converters, and mobile devices. They are used to condition electrical signals and control switching through operating voltages or currents. Enhancement-Mode Transistors are critical electronic components primarily used in high-performance and low-power applications.
