What is TRIACS

A triac is a type of thyristor, which is a solid-state device that can control the flow of AC electrical power.

The triac is a three-terminal device that consists of a gate, a main terminal (MT1), and a second terminal (MT2).

When a small current is applied to the gate of the triac, it triggers the device and allows current to flow from MT1 to MT2.

The triac remains in the on state as long as current flows through the device, and it automatically turns off when the current drops to zero.

Triacs are commonly used in applications where it is necessary to control the flow of AC power, such as dimming of light bulbs, motor speed control, and temperature control in heating systems.

They are also used in power switching circuits and as solid-state relays.

One of the advantages of triacs is their ability to handle both positive and negative half-cycles of an AC waveform, which makes them ideal for use in AC power control applications.

They are also highly reliable and have a long operational life, which makes them an attractive alternative to mechanical relays for many applications.
