What is 3-STATE

3-STATE is one of the output states used in electronic components.

Typically, a part with a 3-STATE output has three states of a 3-phase output: High, Low, and Hi-Z (High Impedance).

Hi-Z state means the output is disconnected. This usually appears when the output is not being used.

In this state, the output has no effect on external circuitry.

3-STATE outputs are used by many devices.

For example, a memory chip's output can be a 3-STATE output, and its data lines can be shared with other chips.

This allows multiple chips to simultaneously write or read data to the bus.

Components with 3-STATE outputs include buffers, drivers, and registers.

These components are used to actively drive the output and transmit data by switching between high voltage and low voltage states.
