What is DISCRETE

In electronic parts, 'Discrete' refers to parts that are used individually and independently. In other words, an electronic component that performs an independent function.

Electronic components can be divided into two main types. One is a 'Discrete' component, and the other is an 'Integrated Circuit (IC)' or 'Chip'.

Discrete parts: Discrete parts are individually packaged parts that perform a single function. These components come in many types, such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, and transistors. These parts have one or more connection pins, and can be used separately or combined to implement complex functions where necessary in the circuit.

Integrated Circuit (IC): An integrated circuit is a component in which several electronic components are integrated into a single chip. Complex circuitry that performs multiple functions is integrated into a small chip. Integrated circuits are developing at various levels, such as Large Scale Integration (LSI), Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI), and Ultra Large Scale Integration (ULSI).

Discrete parts perform simple functions compared to integrated circuits or are used when specific functions are required. Integrated circuits also provide advantages in terms of power consumption, size, performance, and reliability by integrating complex circuits into a small space. However, discrete parts are still widely used for specific requirements or special applications.
