What is Distortion

In electronic components, 'Distortion' means distortion or transformation between an input signal and an output signal. In general, it refers to a phenomenon in which signals are distorted in the process of processing or transmitting signals through electronic components or electrical circuits.

Distortion is an element that damages the accuracy and integrity of the original signal, and can occur for a variety of reasons. Some major forms of distortion are:

Distortion Harmonic Distortion: Distortion, usually caused by non-linear devices or circuits, in which harmonics of the original signal are added or distorted. Additional frequency components appear in the frequency domain.

Attenuation Distortion: Distortion that is attenuated during signal propagation, resulting in a decrease or loss of amplitude in the signal. It can occur mainly when a signal passes through an electrical cable or electrical circuit.

Phase Distortion: A phenomenon that occurs mainly in filters or signal processing devices, and is a phenomenon in which the phase of a signal is distorted or changed. Only the phase of the signal is changed without altering the signal's onset or amplitude.

Time Distortion: A phenomenon in which a signal is temporally distorted, such as signal delay or reduction/enlargement.

Minimizing distortion is one of the important goals of electronic component design and signal processing. Minimizing distortion preserves the accuracy and integrity of the signal and preserves the characteristics of the original signal as much as possible. Some signal processing technologies or electronic components have features to compensate or correct distortion.
