What is ENCODER

In electronic parts, 'Encoder' refers to a device that converts information such as rotation angle or movement distance into digital signals. Encoders are used with rotating axes or moving objects and represent their movement as digital signals that are used to process and utilize the information in electronic systems such as controllers or computers.

In general, Encoders fall into two main types:

Rotary Encoder: A rotary encoder detects movement to rotate a shaft and converts the rotation angle into a digital signal. Rotary encoders include absolute rotary encoders and relative rotary encoders.

Absolute Rotary Encoder: An absolute rotary encoder displays the absolute position of the axis of rotation as a unique code, such as binary code or gray code. This allows the position of the axis of rotation to be tracked in real time.

Incremental Rotary Encoder: A relative rotary encoder detects only relative movement of the axis of rotation. This encoder encodes the change in how much the axis of rotation has moved, so it calculates the position of the axis of rotation relative to its starting position.

Linear Encoder: A linear encoder detects the moving distance of an object and converts it into a digital signal. A linear encoder detects the path of movement of an object instead of an axis of rotation. These encoders are used to measure the position or velocity of a linear movement.

Encoders are used in various fields such as robots, CNC machines, automobile steering systems, printers, and sensor reading. It plays an important role in automation systems and position-based control systems by converting rotation and movement into digital signals so that precise position or movement can be tracked and controlled.
