In electronic components, 'EPROM' is an abbreviation for 'Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory', a term referring to programmable read-only memory that can be erased. EPROM is read-only memory in which data can be stored and read, but the user cannot program or modify the data.
EPROM is used to permanently store digital information and retains that information even when the data is powered off. Because of these characteristics, EPROM is useful for storing boot loaders, initialization code, firmware, etc.
However, to correct the data once recorded, the EPROM must be physically erased and reprogrammed with new data. The downside of this characteristic of EPROM is its inflexibility. To overcome these drawbacks, electrically erasable memories such as Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) and flash memories have been developed.
EPROM is an older technology, with higher capacities and faster erase/program speeds such as EEPROM and flash memory being used more recently. However, EPROMs may still be used in some legacy systems or in certain applications.
