What is ESR


In electronic components, 'ESR' is used as an abbreviation for 'Equivalent Series Resistance'. ESR is a concept that applies to some types of capacitors, such as electrolytic capacitors.

Capacitors are devices that store and release electrically charged energy. They are used in electronics to prevent electrostatic liquids or to soften signals by storing energy when current flows and releasing energy when needed. However, inside a capacitor, equivalent series resistance (ESR) occurs.

ESR is the resistance developed by the series portion of the capacitor, which limits the capacitor's flow and causes energy loss. Therefore, ESR affects the electrical characteristics and performance of capacitors, especially at high frequencies.

ESR can be a bigger problem with inhibitor capacitors, and capacitors with high ESR values can fail due to energy loss and heat generation. Therefore, in high-frequency applications, it is important to select capacitors with low ESR values.

ESR can be found in the capacitor's datasheet or manufacturer's specifications, and it is important to select an appropriate capacitor by considering the capacitor's ESR value during the design process.
