What is VARISTOR

A varistor (also known as a voltage-dependent resistor or VDR) is a passive electronic component that is used to protect circuits from over-voltage conditions.

It acts like a variable resistor, with its resistance changing in response to changes in voltage.

Varistors are typically made of metal oxide material and have a non-linear resistance-voltage characteristic, meaning that their resistance changes dramatically with changes in voltage.

When a voltage spike or surge occurs, the varistor's resistance decreases, allowing the excess voltage to be absorbed and thus protecting the circuit from damage.

Varistors are commonly used in applications such as power supplies, power conditioning circuits, and telecommunication systems.

They are often used in combination with other protection devices such as fuses, transient voltage suppressors, and surge arrestors, to provide a multi-layer approach to over-voltage protection.

In summary, a varistor is a passive electronic component that is used to protect circuits from over-voltage conditions by absorbing excess voltage and acting as a variable resistor.
