What is Diacs

DIAC stands for diode for alternating current, and it is an electronic component that is used to trigger triacs, which are another type of electronic component.

DIACs are a type of semiconductor device that is designed to conduct current in both directions when a certain voltage is applied to it.

The structure of a DIAC is similar to that of a thyristor, with two alternating layers of P-type and N-type semiconducting materials.

However, unlike a thyristor, which is a unidirectional device, a DIAC can conduct current in both directions when the voltage across it reaches a certain threshold.

When the voltage across the DIAC reaches the threshold level, the device becomes highly conductive, allowing a large amount of current to flow through it.

DIACs are often used to trigger triacs, which are used in applications such as dimmer switches, motor speed controllers, and power supplies.

When a voltage is applied to a DIAC, it allows a small current to flow through it, which triggers the triac to turn on and conduct a larger current.

This can be used to control the amount of power delivered to a load, such as a light bulb or a motor, by adjusting the phase angle of the AC voltage.

DIACs are available in a variety of packages, including axial leaded, surface mount, and through-hole mount, and are rated for different voltage and current levels.

They are widely used in a range of electronic circuits and applications where AC power control is required.
