What is SIDACs


SIDAC stands for Silicon Diode for Alternating Current, and it is a type of electronic component that is used as a voltage-controlled switch in AC circuits.

It is a type of thyristor that is similar to a DIAC, but it is designed to operate at higher voltages and currents.

The SIDAC is a four-layer device, with two P-type and two N-type semiconductor layers.

When a voltage is applied to the SIDAC, it will remain in a high-resistance state until the voltage reaches a certain threshold, known as the breakover voltage.

Once the breakover voltage is reached, the SIDAC will suddenly switch to a low-resistance state and allow a large current to flow through it.

This makes the SIDAC useful as a switch in AC circuits, where it can be used to control the flow of current to a load.

SIDACs are often used in high-voltage applications, such as in power supplies, motor control circuits, and lighting systems.

They are available in a range of voltage and current ratings, and can be designed to operate at different breakover voltages.

SIDACs can be used in conjunction with other electronic components, such as capacitors and resistors, to create more complex AC switching circuits.

Like other thyristors, SIDACs are bi-directional devices, meaning they can conduct current in both directions.

This makes them useful in AC circuits where the current flow periodically changes direction.

However, it is important to ensure that the voltage and current ratings of the SIDAC are suitable for the specific application to avoid damage to the device or the circuit.
